Travel West of Sydney
The people of Australia have a reverence and a respect for the vast Australian Outback, an area that accounts for 80% of the Australian land mass. In fact in many ways this is the part of Australia that defines their character. The journey into the Australian heartland is for the slightly more adventurous, a drive of over 600 miles from Sydney to Broken Hill that takes you to the very edge of the great Australian Outback. It's a long straight road over mostly good quality sealed roads and scenery that changes slowly along the way. Those that make this fascinating journey will continue on to South Australia and the attractive capital city of Adelaide.
Choose from the following
Go Outback to Broken Hill & Silverton
Once a thriving mining town for those extracting iron ore, lead, silver & zinc, Broken Hill has evolved in recent years into an iconic Australian Outback town. Its rich cultural heritage supports no less than 40 art galleries and exhibition houses, displaying mostly Australian and Aboriginal art works. The stunning landscapes delight the local artist community here and bring them from across the globe. With nearby Silverton (population 50), these towns are a mecca for movie makers, with productions including 'The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert', 'A Town Like Alice', 'Mad Max' and 'Mission Impossible 2'.

See The Flying Doctor Base At Broken Hill
One of Australia's most successful exports of recent years has been the TV series "The Flying Doctors," based on the activities of The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia that still fulfills its vital role to the Outback community. This is your opportunity to visit a remote Flying Doctors base and to perhaps see their medical team in action. You will hear an informative talk about the invaluable work of the RFDS, have an opportunity to purchase souvenirs and to view historical photos and equipment.

Feel Ancient Spirits at Mungo National Park & The Walls of China
200 miles from Broken Hill is the World Heritage designated Mungo National Park, which includes the amazing 20 mile crescent of the Walls of China, sculpted by erosion, wind, rain and sun. Mungo National Park has maintained a continuous record of human occupation stretching back well over 40,000 years. Rain and wind has also uncovered ancient fireplaces and hearths, as well as calcified plant matter, artifacts, stone tools and animal bones. Note that not all roads are paved in this region.
