Dunedin & Coastal Otago
If Christchurch is the most 'English' of cities then Dunedin is equally proud of its Scottish heritage, dating back to the settlement of the first Scottish immigrants in 1848. Dunedin is also the step off point to the beautiful Otago Peninsula, teeming with wildlife and a place to witness the unforgettable sight of the endangered Yellow Eyed Penguin returning from the sea to their land based nests late each afternoon. The city has a fine university (one fifth of the population is made up of students) and a colorful history including a colorful 'boom and bust' era created by the Otago gold rush of the 1860's.

Visit the The Royal Albatross Colony
The Royal Albatross Colony at Taiaroa Head is a rare opportunity to visit a mainland based albatross breeding colony. The first Taiaroa-reared albatross chick flew in 1938 and this now protected nature reserve has grown into a colony of around 140 birds. The sight of a soaring albatross is unforgettable - held aloft on slim wings measuring up to 11 feet across, the great albatross is capable of swooping speeds of more than 70 mph. Seeing these majestic seabirds in their natural habitat is an experience not to be missed. Visitors to the Royal Albatross Centre can also view the interpretative wildlife displays and learn about the historical use of the Tairoa area.

In 2007, the Barker family, Margaret and her children Sophie and Norcombe, celebrated 40 years of living at the Castle, longer than the original Larnach family and they will continue to lavish the care and attention that this wonderful building deserves. As Margaret Barker says 'The Castle has a fate of its own and we are mere caretakers in the meantime'.
