Gisborne & Eastland Region
Eastland is the most isolated region of the North Island which gives it a special appeal, a charm and an atmosphere that is quite distinctive compared to any other region in New Zealand. It is a place of picturesque small towns, sheep farms and sunshine, a place with scores of beautiful beaches and bays and where the feeling is 'laid back'. It's also a traditional home to the Maori people and in this region many of their traditions are maintained to this day. Gisborne, the biggest city is the first city in the world to greet the sun each morning and the center of a thriving wine region.
Choose from the following
Visit the Eastwoodhill Arboretum
This guided, small group tour starts with a drive through the rolling foothills of Poverty Bay to Eastwoodhill, New Zealand's largest and finest collection of exotic trees and shrubs, recently appointed a 'Garden of National Significance'. Afterwards proceed to the nearby scenic Rere Waterfalls for a picnic, and complete the day with a visit to the newly established Kew Winery.
From $85 USD per person

Enjoy Gisborne's Wineries
The Gisborne district is New Zealand's third largest area in vines, and is home to a number of quality producers. Gisborne wineries concentrate on white wines, especially chardonnay, but also gewuertraminer, chenin blanc, and pinot gris. Read the link below to see some of the vineyards of this region and find time to visit at your leisure.

Explore Coastal Gisborne - Moana Eco Tour
Enjoy a sea voyage of discovery around Gisborne's pristine coastline when you join traditional Maori seafarers and experience their environment at first hand. Visit Whangara Island where the highly acclaimed New Zealand movie "Whale Rider" was filmed. Observe sea birds, dolphin and seals when you stop at the marine reserve Te Tapuwae o Rongokako and also hear about the legends of this sacred area.
From $86 USD per person

Jetboat the Motu River
Drive The Pacific Coast Highway
This sparsely populated stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway runs between Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne in the Poverty Bay region. It covers a distance of over 200 miles and includes some of the world's most spectacular coastal scenery. For a brilliant description that captures the spirit of this journey read Lube Vangelova's excellent article in the New York Times in 2002 (click on Media) and maybe be tempted to visit this beautiful place where the movie 'Whale Rider' was filmed. If you select this option, uplanit.com will suggest a 2 day itinerary.
