Queenstown & Southern Lakes

Queenstown & Southern Lakes

The rainforests of Fiordland, the lakes Wakatipu and Wanaka and the resort town of Queenstown are collectively known as The Southern Lakes, one of the most diverse and beautiful places in New Zealand and the world. It was no acccident that director Peter Jackson filmed most of 'The Lord of The Rings' here. Queenstown also has some great resorts and hotels, excellent restaurants and cafes and a reputation as an action center - the original home of bungy jumping plus jetboating, skydiving, river surfing and much more.

Drive The Crown Range

Drive The Crown Range
Image - thanks to Michael Kennedy

This 75 mile road from Wanaka to Queenstown is the highest road in New Zealand and will particularly appeal to the driving enthusiast. Although it twists and turns in places it is a safe drive for the average careful driver. The views from the road will take your breath away so allow plenty of time for photo stops. Now completely sealed for the entire 75 miles, the Crown Range is one of the iconic drives of New Zealand and not to be missed.

Take the road to the Milford Sound Cruise

Take the road to the Milford Sound Cruise

This one of the world's finest alpine drives. From Te Anau the road winds through the Eglinton and Hollyford Valleys then through the Homer Tunnel and to the awesome sight of Mitre Peak towering above the glassy waters of Milford Sound. Our suggestion is that even if you have your own rental car, leave it behind for the day and take an organized coach tour - the road can be quite challenging at times and this option will allow you to sit back and really enjoy the magnificent scenery - the coach will make stops along the way for photo opportunities. If you choose this option Uplanit.com will organize a full day tour and cruise on Milford Sound.

Enjoy an Overnight Cruise on Fiordland's Doubtful Sound

Enjoy an Overnight Cruise on Fiordland's Doubtful Sound

The day starts with a cruise across the mysterious and lovely Lake Manapouri often referred to as the 'loveliest' of all New Zealand's many lakes. After crossing the Wilmot Pass, reach Doubtful Sound, the deepest of all fiords where you board the Fiordland Navigator for your overnight stay and cruise. With its ancient rain forest and abundant wildlife Doubtful Sound is quite simply and unquestionably breathtaking. Practically untouched by man the physical grandeur of towering peaks, outstanding waterfalls (Browne Falls cascade over 2,000 feet into the fiord near Hall Arm) and lack of wind create a powerful atmosphere of solitude and serenity. See Fiordland crested penguins, bottlenose dolphins and New Zealand fur seals.

From $365 USD per person from Manapouri, incl. dinner, bed, breakfast
