Twin Coasts of Coromandel Peninsula
The Coromandel Peninsula is a narrow isthmus, just 25 miles wide at its broadest point lying to the east of Auckland, a drive to the main town of Whitianga taking a little over 2 hours. Like Northland it is warm and sunny with beautiful white sand beaches and exotic native forests. However it is also strikingly different Northland - a long central chain of forest-covered mountains and hills stretch from north to south and divide the Peninsula into two distinctive coast lines. One faces west and the Hauraki Gulf, the other faces east and the warm waters of the South Pacific, each with their own unique beauty. Allow 4 days to enjoy the diverse beauty of The Coromandel and be sure to include Cathedral Cove where scenes from the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian were recently filmed.

Enjoy a 'Kiwi Dundee' Adventure
Doug Johansen (or 'Kiwi Dundee' as the media have dubbed him) has appeared on programs such as Discovery Channel in the United States, extolling the beauty and the uniqueness of the New Zealand landscape, flora and fauna. With his partner Jan and his small team of enthusiasts he has become a high profile and passionate advocate of sustainable tourism and conservation in New Zealand. A day with Kiwi Dundee is a remarkable mixture of fun and education as you walk in the semi-tropical rainforests, explore goldcaves sparkling with glow worms and learn about the birdlife and and remarkable history of the region. Lunch is included either at Hotwater Beach (tide permitting) or a favorite cafe.
From $151 USD per person

Visit Driving Creek Railway
Many years ago Auckland potter, conservationist, engineer, and artist Barry Brickell started a small pottery business in the forests of Coromandel and over the years he has developed his property into a fully fledged artist's community and the location of New Zealand's only narrow gauge railway. This transports visitors through outstanding native forests to a lookout station high in the hills with magnificent views of the Hauraki Gulf and surrounding countryside. Of particular interest are their ongoing efforts to restore the forests of New Zealand's uniquely magnificent Kauri tree.

Walk to Whangapoua Beach
At Whangapoua Harbor and just a 15 minute walk around a point is one of the finest yet least-known beaches in the country, a place of isolation, tranquility and stunning beauty - Wainuiototo Bay (also called New Chums Beach). Crystal white sands and native forests that stretch right down to the shoreline make this a very special place.

Kayak Cathedral Cove
Cathedral Cove offers some of the best paddling on the planet. The spectacular golden beach coastline, the amazing islands and sea-caves make this organized kayak adventure a 'must-do'. This uplanit.com operator has won tourism awards for the professional standards set, but a customer says it best 'Good coffee, great caves, excellent tour, thanks for a fantastic experience' - Brian Johnston, Dallas, Texas U.S.A. No previous kayaking experience is needed; the kayaks are stable double sea kayaks, and qualified guides will give you full instructions and assistance.
From $53 USD per person

Enjoy the Coromandel Coastal Walkway Tour
This is a one day organized walking tour that takes you by small coach to the remote upper point of the Coromandel Peninsula, places most never get to see. Travel from Coromandel Town to the top of the peninsula over the beautiful, winding pohutukawa fringed coast road, stopping for coffee at Colville. From Fletcher Bay begins a comfortable 3 to 4 hour trek over the Coromandel Coastal Walkway, traversing pristine bush, farmland and coastline. Connect with your bus again at picturesque Stony Bay for refreshments and a well earned rest! Then travel back to Coromandel Town via Port Charles and Colville. This walk has been graded "easy" by the Department of Conservation.
