For two people we recommend that the minimum size you should consider is the intermediate category, a Mitsubishi Lancer, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata or a similar sized car. In both the North and South Islands driving conditions are in the main easy, but there are times, for example crossing the Haast Pass or driving across the plateau of the Desert Road when the extra power of these size vehicles makes driving that much more relaxed and comfortable.
